LOVING CAN HURT
1 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)
“[Love] is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
Love is a command and in following this command, the world sees our identity in Christ. Jesus said to His disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).
Jesus made it a command because He knows there are times we will not want to show love—when we feel hurt, disappointed, or betrayed. It is in this moment that today’s scripture is relevant: “…love keeps no record of wrongs”. Showing genuine love in this moment reflects the God we have in us who loved us even in our sin and rebellion against Him (Romans 5:8).
Beloved, God expects our love to transcend our friends and family. We are to love our enemies, do good to those who wish us evil and even bless those who curse us. Loving these people will cost us, but our show of love will not go unrewarded.
